Convert Google Maps Coordinates to Garmin DDM (Free Online)

Google Maps uses decimal degrees (DD) format, while most Garmin GPS devices prefer degrees and decimal minutes (DDM) format. Here's how to convert between them quickly and accurately.

What is DDM Format?

DDM (Degrees and Decimal Minutes) displays coordinates as:

  • Latitude: N 54° 56.550'

  • Longitude: E 023° 54.548'

This format is preferred by many Garmin devices because it's easier to enter manually and read on small GPS screens.

Step-by-Step Conversion

Method 1: Use Our Free Converter

1. Copy any Google Maps URL (like https://maps.google.com/?q=54.8979,23.8860)
2. Paste it into our converter above

Method 2: Manual Calculation

If you prefer to calculate manually:

1. Get the decimal degrees from Google Maps
2. For latitude (first number):
- Keep the whole number as degrees
- Multiply decimal part by 60 for minutes
- Add N/S hemisphere
3. For longitude (second number):
- Keep the whole number as degrees
- Multiply decimal part by 60 for minutes
- Add E/W hemisphere

Example Conversion

Google Maps: 54.8979, 23.8860

Latitude calculation:

  • Degrees: 54

  • Minutes: 0.8979 × 60 = 53.874

  • Result: N 54° 53.874'

Longitude calculation:

  • Degrees: 23

  • Minutes: 0.8860 × 60 = 53.160

  • Result: E 023° 53.160'

Final DDM: N 54° 53.874' E 023° 53.160'

Common Issues and Solutions

Wrong Hemisphere

  • Northern latitudes: Use N (positive numbers)
  • Southern latitudes: Use S (negative numbers)
  • Eastern longitudes: Use E (positive numbers)
  • Western longitudes: Use W (negative numbers)

Rounding Precision

Most Garmin devices accept 3 decimal places for minutes (like 53.874). More precision isn't usually necessary for navigation.
